Wearing a suit day in and day out can be enjoyable or agonizing, and one of the key factors of your comfort level is fabric weight. Here's how to prevent pushy sales guys from selling you an inferior, uncomfortable suit. Of the five factors involved in suit selection, fabric weight is number 5. Here's why.
Colour, composition, weave and pattern are all elements of the perfect suit. But, who cares how great a suit looks if it isn't comfortable? Choosing the right fabric weight ensures you of a owning a suit you'll love wearing - even if you have to wear it almost every day!

4. Pattern
5. Weight
In this article, we look into the importance of fabric weight.
Last but not least, when choosing fabric for yourbusiness suits or other types of suits, be mindful of the fabric weight. Not to be confused with Super counts, the weight of the wool fabric you buy is vital. Why is that? Because in the warmer months, lightweight fabrics keep you cool and dry; for cooler months, you'll appreciate the additional warmth of a slightly heavier weight fabric.
Weight and Super counts are loosely related as the higher the Super count, the finer the fabric and the less “weight” per single yard. However, how much weight per single yard is also influenced by the number of plys in the wool.
For example, 3 ply means there are 3 threads intertwined together in each yarn and conversely, 4 threads are used in 4 ply. The higher the ply, the heavier the finished cloth.
Typically, only two threads are used for suit fabrics; this is referred to as 2 ply or 2 fold. In general, 2 fold is a good all-round weight, great for all season wear and conditions and ideal for:
For special occasions, fabric weight is also a consideration. For example, casual suits for day time wear in spring and summer will be more comfortable when made from lighter weight 2 ply wools. Wedding suits for wear in warmer months will also feel more comfortable when made from light weight fabric; after all, there's plenty to stress you out about weddings without suffering in a hot, uncomfortable suit.
