What Are the Different Types of Formal Men's Suits?

Formal suits for men have significantly expanded over the more recent years between the classics and the contemporary, offering a wide range of choices to accommodate different preferences and events.

There is something to fit every type of taste, from traditional, modern and draw droppingly unique.

Whether you’re completing that special milestone of finishing your year 12 formal, year 10 formal event, or attending your first gala, this all begins with a tailored suit.

At Montagio we’re all about creating the perfect look and fit and talking you through the different styled looks, including ;

The Classics

Let’s start with the classic suit, which is still a popular option in 2025, known for its timeless look and adaptability. This style of suit is good for a variety of formal occasions due to the classical fit and design.

The classic cut is defined by a straight silhouette, which starts at the top of the jacket and flows down to the pants, with a less tapered look and a more relaxed fit on the body.

The pants sit right up on your waistline, with a very straight leg shape in the material.

Single Breasted Suit

Single_Breasted_Suit

It features a single row of buttons down the front of the jacket, usually between one to three buttons in a line.

How to style it :

The single breasted suit option can be paired with the same styled material and colour or a contrasting pair of trousers.

You can mix and match for those who prefer a non matching look, this is often the-go-to option in most wardrobes and for those who attend formal or business events regularly and want to switch it up.

Double Breasted Suit

This suit features overlapping front panels and two sets of buttons that are parallel to one another on the blazer or jacket, this gives off a more formal and elegant look.

How to style it :

For a year 12 formal suit or a work event this adds some contrast to the shape and top of your jacket, you can wear the buttons done up fully or partially done.

You can switch up the trousers for chinos, and for an even more relaxed look can select navy coloured jeans depending on the jacket colour.

In the example above you could easily style this shade of teal, with a navy or more neutral colour to offset the jacket in contrast.

This might be something you consider if you are attending your year 10 formal, as it is a bit more casual while still giving off that flare and formalised look in the jacket.

The Three Piece Suit

What really makes a three piece suit is the added addition of a waistcoat, to the jacket and pants making it a completed three piece ensemble.

How to style it :

For that extra detailing and a more polished formal look, try a neutral tone or a tanned colour three piece suit which is completely matching, this will really highlight a classical and completed look to a three piece set.

You can also choose to add shoes accessories and offset your suit in a derby or brogue style, to create a modern classic combination.

Formal Suits

Most suits are considered to be formal in one way or another, however certain styles are very well suited for most formal occasions.

This is where you can really go all out with the detailing, think of bow ties and satin detailing!

The Black Tie

The classic formal suit, also called a dinner suit. Is worn with a bow tie, and consists of a black jacket with satin lapels, matching trousers with a satin stripe along the pants.

How to style it :

Pair your suit with a cotton satin shirt that is tailored comfortably to your body type. You can even add satin to the buttons even if you're feeling like that extra level of detail.

For really high end corporate events or your year 12 formal, this will really help you make a grand entrance.

Tuxedos

The Tuxedo is the next level up from a formal suit, representing a highly sophisticated look for red carpet events, weddings, charity dinners or if you really want to make a grand entrance to a special event.

How to style it :

For the ultimate tux and classic look, you can go for a solid black coloured theme.

The jacket can be detailed with a satin lapel and pants that come with a strip of satin that matches in with the material of the jacket lapel.

Accessorise with a bow tie, a silk or satin pocket square and you’ll be dressed to the nines.

Unique Styling

For those who are looking for outside the box looks in 2025 that feel on point, there are alternatives to traditional formal suits. This is where you can really switch up the material, texture and feel to your overall appearance.

How to style it :

The velvet suit blazer, and pants combo. Try burgundy or a navy blue blazer, mixed with cotton or wool material pants in the same tone, this gives a luxurious and refined look while also offering that point of difference.

Add further touches, like a velvet bow tie or a textured tie in a contrasting colour to really make our outfit pop, but also retain its formal style with a modern vintage feel.

Is there a Difference Between my Year 10 or 12 Suit Choice?

When it comes to styling your year 10 formal suit or year 12 formal suit, the main difference is the level of formaility. Year 12 formals tend to be more formal events overall, with students often selecting classical, three piece suits or a tux.

Year 10 formals are also special but are slightly less formal allowing students more freedom of expression through a variety of suit selections.

At the end of the day it comes down to your personal choice and comfortability. Our professional stylists at Montagio want to help you feel your best at your next special event. We offer free consultations on styling options, fit & sizing, material selection with our bespoke tailoring services.

How do you Style a Formal Suit?

It starts with styling your jacket all the way down to your pants.

There is an art to styling your suit for any event, while also showing your individual style. In 2025, formal suit styling combines the traditional and the modern look together.

The shoulder style of the jacket

Your jacket’s shoulder style design establishes the overall tone of your suit. As your outfit is viewed from the neck down which naturally draws your eyes to the shoulders.

How to style your jacket shoulders :

  • Straight shoulder : Is a clean classic look as the name suggests sits straight on your shoulders t, with no padding or minimal padding. Good for the majority of formal occasions.
  • Roped shoulders : Has a slight elevation at the head of the sleeve head, creating a structured and formal look, which is excellent for black tie events.
  • Natural shoulders : The flows with the natural curve of your shoulders, which is a contemporary and relaxed look, for modern formal events

The vent of your suit

The vent is a long vertical split or opening which is found at the back of a suit jacket, affecting both the style and functionality of the suit.

  • Single Vent : The most classic option, which gives a more relaxed look and sits at the very centre of the jacket.
  • Double Vent : There are two slits at the back of the jacket, allowing more movement and a more fitted appearance.
  • Ventless : Is a very sleek, unbroken line that is good for slim fitted suits and tuxedos.

The pocket style

You can add pocket styling to your suit jacket, which relies on the shape and stitching adding flair to the front of your suit.

  • Flap Pocket : Considered as the more popular choice for most suits, where the opening is covered by a small rectangular piece of fabric that sits over the top, (this is the flap element of the pocket)
  • Jetted Pocket : is a slitted styled pocket, where the fabric has thin reinforced edges (welts) or slight material piping, the inside of the pocket is concealed into the suit. Styled on dinner jackets and tuxedos.
  • Patch Pocket : This is sewn directly onto the outside of a jacket, rather than on the inside. Compliments blazers and suits that are not as formal.

Pant style

How to style your pants :

  • Flat front pants : A very smooth look, flat fronted design without any pleats, often selected for modern suit design. A common choice for most formal events and school formals as well.
  • Pleated pants : This style of pants features pleats or folds right along the waistband, which gives extra room and comfort. Creating a stylish and vertical look for more formal and classical suits.

How a Formal Suit Should Fit

Think of a really tight or loose fitting glove, it feels awkward and restrictive and won’t work to your best advantage.

Your suit really comes down to the fit and comfortability, so you can move with confidence during any event.

The Measurements

Jacket

  • There should be no overlapping or pulling; the shoulders should stop where your actual shoulders naturally sit.
  • When you place your arms at your sides, the jacket sleeve should reveal 1-2cm of the shirt cuff
  • As a general rule of thumb your suit jacket length should end 1-1.5 inches above the bottom of your crotch. The bottom of the jacket should be closer to the bottom of the trouser crotch than it is to your belt line, otherwise you risk the jacket looking too short.

Read more about the length of a suit jacket on our website.

The Shirt

  • The collar of your shirt should allow for two fingers to fit naturally between your neck and collar
  • The sleeves of the shirt should extend outward between 1-2cms beyond the jacket sleeves
  • The shirt's body should fit the natural curves of your torso without feeling tight or billowing over the top of your pants.

Suit Pants

  • A good pair of pants should sit comfortably where the waistband should sit comfortably at your natural waistline, without the need for a belt.
  • The seat of the pants should drape over your butt without dragging or dropping.
  • When you stand the length should cause a small break over your shoes.
