Creating pleasing combinations of shirts and ties is a challenge for most men. If you can relate to that struggle, here's some tips for matching shirts and ties like a pro - Every. Single. Time.
Matching your tie to your business shirt is your first step. This is because the business shirt is the most important element – next to the jacket – in determining the colour and pattern of your tie.
While you might take your jacket off, your shirt stays on all day. Any colour clash between the tie and the shirt is, therefore, painfully obvious.
If you're a minimalist, or just like to do things the easy way, keep it simple and stick with solid shirts when you coordinatebusiness shirts and ties. Whites offer a neutral base (think blank canvas) and are renowned for matching anything.
Light blues are the next best bet as very few colours clash with them, and they look dapper with tailor made men's suits. Off-white and pastel coloured shirts can be easy to match as well, although it is preferable for there to be a clear distinction between the shirt and tie fabrics.
Avoid matching a striped or patterned tie with a shirt having stripes, checks or other patterns of a similar size or orientation.
If a pairing looks too busy, it probably is, so select another tie. A general rule is to select a mostly solid tie to go with prominently striped, checked or patterned shirts.
When working with checked fabrics, match the pattern's casualness with a tie that conveys a hint of playfulness.
Club, foulard and paisley ties – along with solid wool ties with squared off ends – are perfect in this situation. The more adventurous man or those with an enhanced fashion sense might want to experiment with matching ties with shirt fabrics that combine checks of various sizes.
Lastly, avoid colour combinations that are either too jarring (because of your lack of contrast) or too monotonous, as they serve to washout your complexion.
