Although men traditionally do not wear as much jewelry as women, there are some accessories that enhance your appearance and could be worn on appropriate occasions. Here’s some surprising things your probably did not know about the importance of men's watches, cufflinks, tie accessories and rings.
Whether you are wearing custom made men’s suits or jeans and a casual shirt, the right jewelry can enhance your appearance. However, jewelry should be subtle; not distracting or ostentatious. For example:
A general guideline to follow is to match metal with metal. As a rule of thumb, if your belt buckle is silver, your cuff links, tie clip and anything other jewelry should be silver.
However, wearing a gold wedding ring with silver cuff links is also acceptable. When dressing for the nightlife, adhere to these simple guidelines as well:
Did you know some folks might define you by your watch? For instance, gaudy, bejeweled timepieces flashing out from the French cuffs of investment bankers are as acceptable as are the thin, un-numbered dress watches on the wrists of gallery curators. From treasured timepieces to day-to-day varieties – all are acceptable.
However, a point to heed is: the simpler a watch, the more formal it is. So, when you are decked out in a tuxedo or a tailcoat, wearing a watch is not required as per tradition, since keeping track of the time is not associated with partying.
Professionals employed in fields demanding rigid formality in dress such as politicians and lawyers could wear classy timepieces with no jewels, moving bezels, excess dials etc. Gold, silver, metal and leather bands are equally acceptable. Above all, though, match your watch to the impression you wish to convey.
If your business shirts feature French cuffs, you should wear cufflinks. Cufflinks are available in many styles of gold, silver, gunmetal, brass etc. When selecting them, remember people will examine them closely and draw conclusions about you based on the cufflinks. For instance, are they simple and tasteful or bold and brash?
Do you wish to be perceived as being what your cufflinks denote? If so, make sure your cufflinks match the impression you want to portray. Simple, classic designs or cufflinks with some sentimental value are always safe choices.
A tie clip stops your tie from flying over your shoulder on a windy day. Since this is a utilitarian accessory, it is best to stick with a simple strip of gold, silver or some other metal; anything else may appear gaudy.
To counteract the rigidity suggested by a tie clip, try wearing it at an angle. A tie chain functions the same as a tie clip, except instead of a fixed bar holding your tie in place, there is a drooping chain of silver or gold. The tie tack resembles a stud earring with an inch of fine chain extending from the back. To wear it properly, you must stick it through the centre of the tie and attach the chain to a buttonhole. Since this normally requires poking a hole in the tie, thereby damaging it, we recommend avoiding tie tacks.
Since men do not own a rotation of wedding rings in various metals to coordinate with their other jewelry, a plain band of gold, silver or platinum is typically the most stylish choice. In addition to wedding rings, other rings holding symbolic values can be worn. Think of men wearing a class, athletic or fraternal ring.
While wearing rings for their own sake is considered dubious, if you are in a position where looking rich can be advantageous, a ring embedded with precious stones can be a classic choice within the boundaries of professional attire.
No matter how you choose to accessorize your outfit, wearing well-made, custom tailored clothing is sure to improve your appearance instantly.
