With the coldest time of the year upon us, we’re sure that most of you have already dug out your winter coat for the chilly mornings. But if you’re one of those that has yet to invest in a proper coat that scores high in the sartorial stakes then read on for a few tips on how to choose that all important winter coat.

Colours

When it comes to Winter, there are a few stock colours that you simply cannot go wrong with. Think browns, navy blues, greys, charcoals and even greens when deciding on your hue of choice but considering that this is an overcoat we’d advise to keep it subdued rather than flamboyant. A nice dark military green is infinitely preferable to something in lime. Of course, you can always fall back on the old faithful black that goes with everything - but why not try stepping outside of your comfort zone this year?

Styles

Now far be it from us to steer you in a particular direction (we’d never do such a thing) but although we love our parkas, the fact is that they’re only suitable for weekend or casual wear. If you’re investing in a high-quality overcoat then why not have it tailored? You can choose something more refined like a peacoat style that looks equally good with a suit as it does with your smart casual outfit. Sorry, but we’re all about the smart look here at Montagio whether it’s a workday or not.

If you’re on the lookout for something that’s much less formal and not too bulky but that will still keep out the chill then a quilted jacket or a blazer is just the ticket. The quilted jacket brings a distinguished country gent look into your wardrobe while the blazer, full of class and that smartness we love, speaks for itself.

Uses

So before you decide on one of those styles, you first need to consider where you’re going to wear it and how much use it will get. Is it just for weekend walks with the pooch or is it for your daily commute?

  • Office – Your office workwear should be a clear indicator as to what your new overcoat should look like. Ideally if you’re hitting the shops or your friendly neighbourhood tailor (that’s us) to check out overcoats, then you should wear your work clothes. This makes it much easier to match up a style that suits your office look. You should also take into account that an overcoat for daily commutes needs to be capable of taking a fair beating, so durability is your number one concern when choosing fabric.
  • Weekend – Is it for wearing on a night out or for weekend hikes with your other half? For running from the bus to your mate’s house, any standard casual jacket will do the trick instead of a heavy overcoat. But for extended periods of time in the great outdoors, you’ll probably want to be looking at one of those quilted jackets we mentioned earlier.

Now the world of men’s coats can be a torturous place full of shoddy workmanship and cheap knockoffs, so why not check out how we go about the business of custom tailored overcoats. We can even help you choose a style and colour that will fit you to a T.
