Don’t make the mistake of relegating your black suit to funeral-only attire. That same ubiquitous suit can be worn to work, meetings, weddings, formal occasions, black tie dinners - and yes - also to funerals.
While fashion trends seem to be veering away from the solid black suit, it's a mistake to exclude the quintessential black suit from your wardrobe. Black suits evoke images of power, sex appeal, and mystery.
Black is the most slimming colour and works wonders for concealing an unflattering shape - particularly when the fabric is tailored correctly. Working with the sharp contrast of a crisp white shirt, you can wear almost any tie colour with a black suit, which makes it a no-hassle choice on a rushed mornings.
Recently, we've heard speculation as to whether a black suit can be worn during the day or not. In our professional opinion, we believe it is acceptable to wear one during the day only if you work in a conservative office environment, are attending a day wedding, or going to a funeral. Otherwise, black is the definitive colour of the night and most suitable for evening wear.
If you are wearing a black suit to your own wedding, then you may want to include style features such as either a satin covered lapel or satin bordered lapel with satin covered buttons. This adds some extra elegance to your look and will also differentiate you as the groom from all the other guests and groomsmen in black garments.
Chace Crawford who plays Nate Archibald on Gossip Girl superbly showcases many variations of the Black Suit with bespoke touches.
Here we see Chase Crawford in a two button 2-piece black suit. It has a satin-covered peak lapel, straight pockets, and a high button position, with hand-craft top stitching clearly visible on the lapel as well as the pockets. The modern look is finished with the flat-front trouser.
Here we see Chase Crawford in a 2-piece tuxedo style two-button black suit. The material is a self-stripe black. The lapel is a satin-covered slim notch lapel with hand-craft top stitching.
The black suit has a low button position to give a deep V and show plenty of the tuxedo shirt with the french cuffs and black buttons. The pockets are straight and have a satin trim but are not satin covered. The look is finished off with the black silk bow-tie.
Yet another unique black suit modelled by Chase Crawford - the styling here is a one button tuxedo-style 2-piece suit. Due to the single button, the V is very deep, exposing plenty of the shirt as well as the slim, white satin tie. The peak lapel has satin trim around the edges along with hand-craft top stitching that continues all the way to the bottom of the jacket. Additionally, the straight pockets have satin trim just along the top edge.
