Is it February already? It seems like only yesterday that we were recommending Christmas gifts. But alas, it’s true, and here we are again wondering how to woo our partners on the most romantic day of the year.

Valentine’s Day is one of those occasions that just creeps up on you, so the chances are a lot of the best restaurants have limited or no availability. So with that in mind, here are some great ideas that are still bookable and guaranteed to score you some points in the love stakes.

Sydney Harbour lunch cruise

While the majority of Valentine’s Day dates are night affairs, you could surprise your partner by booking a half-day off work and taking a lunchtime cruise with one of the many companies offering romantic packages.

Take a walking tour

Okay, so this particular date requires a little socialization with the guides and other walkers, but it’s a lovely way to spend a few hours in the evening. Depending on which tour you choose, you can take a walk to some interesting local bars and maybe stop off for a bite to eat too.

Have a picnic in the park

Pick a park; any one will do and take your date for a lunchtime picnic. Of course, you’ll need to go all out with the prep work. A nice wicker basket, check blanket, wine glasses, and some decent nibbles are all a must, and don’t forget the obligatory red rose and chocolates.

A lunchtime concert

Another unexpected lunchtime date would be a half-hour of classical music in the serene setting of St. James’ Church on Phillips Street. Entry is only a couple of dollars, but the experience is worth so much more. If you want your date to feel like they’re living in a romantic movie, then this is your best bet.

Book a staycation

Yes, they are officially a thing now. While you might not have the time to get out of the city on a Tuesday, there’s no reason you can’t book into a luxury hotel for the night and experience breathtaking night views in the Four Seasons or the historic charm of the Intercontinental.

Catch a movie in the open air

There’s nothing like a trip to the movies for a bit of a cliché date night, but when it’s an open air cinema on Bondi Beach or the rooftop of a bar, you’re going to impress. Deck chairs and blankets are a sure-fire winner for a low key Valentine’s night.

Sample food from all over the world

If your date is a foodie, then they’ll love a trip to the Twilight Food Fair in Civic Park. There you can both sample culinary delights from all over the world, but unfortunately, it’s only on every Friday so you may have to move your Valentine’s Day plans forward to include this.

Enjoy some sensual art

The ‘Liquēre’ photo exhibition by Danny Eastwood opens on February 14th at Black Eye Gallery and features stunning shots of naked human bodies submerged in water. With photos that are both stunning and evocative, this is a date night with a difference.

Learn the botanic story of chocolate

Valentine’s Day and chocolate are synonymous so what better way to spend the evening than on a self-guided tour of the Sweet Addiction exhibition in the Calyx. It’s a journey through the entire chocolate making process from seed to store, and you get to see the Royal Botanic Society’s newest event space that everyone’s talking about.

Whether it’s a lunchtime concert or an evening of open air film, Valentine’s Dayis just around the corner so get your skates on and start planning. Leave it too late, and those chocolates and flowers from the local newsagent might see you spend Valentine’s Dayin the doghouse.
